From Shooter to Superstar: Caitlin Clark’s Top Plays vs. Washington Mystics

by: D'Joumbarey A. Moreau

From day one, I’ve been hearing how Caitlin Clark was “just a shooter.” Well, look at her now. I’ve never seen her that way, and it’s clear she has always been much more. For those who doubted, I have to ask: what were you saying? I’ll say it again, what were you saying? Caitlin Clark is an elite player. She’s an elite guard.

In her historic game, Caitlin Clark demonstrated her versatility and skill. Here are my top five plays from that unforgettable performance:

1. Starting Strong with a Step-Back Three:

Caitlin set the tone early with a step-back three-pointer over Julie Vanloo. This shot is reminiscent of the greats like James Harden, Maya Moore, and Diana Taurasi. It’s a scorer’s mentality to ensure the ball goes in the hoop, and Caitlin did just that. Julie Vanloo had no chance against Caitlin’s mean step-back, which was a spectacular way to kick off the game.

2. Third Quarter Dominance:

The third quarter saw Caitlin making a series of significant plays, including a patented step-back move. Coming off a screen, she executed a perfect snatch pull, showcasing her ability to adapt and perform under pressure. Her execution was flawless, akin to legends like Michael Jordan and Dwyane Wade.

3. Dishing Dimes to Nalyssa Smith:

Caitlin’s chemistry with Nalyssa Smith was on full display throughout the game. She delivered multiple assists, including a stunning behind-the-back pass that caught everyone off guard. This dynamic duo’s connection was a highlight, and Caitlin’s precise passing elevated Nalyssa’s performance.

4. Defensive Prowess Against Ariel Atkins:

Addressing critics of her defense, Caitlin made a massive block on Ariel Atkins in the third quarter. The move was a two-handed, perfectly positioned block that silenced any doubts about her defensive capabilities. It was a statement play that highlighted her all-around game.

5. Fourth Quarter Takeover:

Caitlin scored 15 points in the fourth quarter, delivering in every way imaginable. She started with a backdoor cut leading to an assist from Lexie Hull and continued to attack the rim, hit step-back threes, and execute catch-and-shoot plays off screens. Defensively, she added two steals that led to crucial buckets, proving her impact on both ends of the floor.

Caitlin Clark played a game that was nothing short of phenomenal. These are my top five favorite plays, but if I missed anything, let me know. What did you think of her performance?

This game was a testament to Caitlin Clark’s elite status, showcasing her skills as a versatile guard who can do it all—score, assist, and defend. For anyone who doubted, it’s time to reconsider. Caitlin Clark is not just a shooter; she is an extraordinary player, redefining what it means to be an elite guard in today’s game.
