A Slam Dunk for the Community
Orlando Magic guard Cole Anthony isn’t just a rising star on the court—he’s a game-changer off of it. Known for his humility and selflessness, Anthony continues to prove that his legacy extends far beyond basketball. This October, he was named the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner, honoring his unwavering dedication to youth health, education, and wellness. Through his 50 Ways Foundation, Anthony exemplifies what it means to truly give back.
A Weekend to Remember: Giving Back in Harlem
Before the NBA season tipped off, Anthony returned to his New York City roots for his fifth annual charity weekend in Harlem. The event was more than just a gathering—it was a masterclass in philanthropy and empowerment.
Highlight Event: The Playbook
Anthony hosted the second annual The Playbook, a financial literacy workshop tailored for some of NYC’s top high school basketball players.
• Topics Covered: Budgeting, saving, building credit, hiring financial advisors, and navigating NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) opportunities.
• Event Impact: Anthony teamed up with financial professionals to emphasize long-term planning for life on and off the court.
But Anthony didn’t stop there. Staying true to his craft, he hosted a free basketball clinic for local youth, donated over 500 backpacks to students, and capped off the weekend with a charity Pro-Am game at the Harlem Police Athletic League. His commitment to his community is as deep as it is genuine.
Inspiring Students in Orlando
Anthony’s impact isn’t confined to Harlem. In Central Florida, he and the Orlando Magic hosted Pick, Read, and Roll, an annual event in partnership with Orange County Public Schools.
• Event Attendance: Nearly 3,200 fourth and fifth graders packed the Kia Center.
• Key Message: Anthony inspired students to embrace education and the power of reading.
• Tangible Results: Participating students saw a 30% increase in reading scores, a testament to the event’s success.
In addition to his speech, Anthony honored 150 students for their exceptional reading achievements, leaving them motivated to reach even greater heights.
Making a Difference Year-Round
Anthony’s work didn’t end when the season started. Over the summer, his 50 Ways Foundation continued to uplift communities.
• Back-to-School Bash: Partnering with Orlando District 6 Commissioner Bakari Burns, Anthony provided school supplies to over 500 youth.
• A Special Surprise: Anthony visited the Ivey Lane Neighborhood Center, delivering dinner, clothing, and school supplies to more than 50 kids.
Why It Matters: “It’s Bigger Than Basketball”
“For me, it’s a really big deal to give back to the youth of Central Florida and back home in New York,” Anthony said. “This is important because it’s bigger than basketball… however I can try to help ease the burden a little, that’s what I try to do.”
Cole Anthony’s humility, passion, and willingness to give back set him apart as a role model who leads with his heart both on and off the court.
Honoring Bob Lanier’s Legacy
The NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award pays tribute to the late Bob Lanier, whose 30 years as an NBA Cares Ambassador left an enduring legacy. Anthony now joins a distinguished group of players who embody Lanier’s spirit of kindness and generosity.
What’s Next? A Night of Recognition
Cole Anthony will be celebrated for his incredible work as the October award recipient during the Orlando Magic’s matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers on November 15. Magic CEO Alex Martins and President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman will present Anthony with the prestigious David Robinson trophy—a well-deserved honor for a player whose impact is felt far beyond the hardwood.
